requires activation every 10 days
Published on May 5, 2008 By Multianna In PC Gaming
let me quote from Source

Mass Effect uses SecuROM and requires an online activation for the first time that you play it. Each copy of Mass Effect comes with a CD Key which is used for this activation and for registration here at the BioWare Community. Mass Effect does not require the DVD to be in the drive in order to play, it is only for installation.

After the first activation, SecuROM requires that it re-check with the server within ten days (in case the CD Key has become public/warez'd and gets banned). Just so that the 10 day thing doesn't become abrupt, SecuROM tries its first re-check with 5 days remaining in the 10 day window. If it can't contact the server before the 10 days are up, nothing bad happens and the game still runs. After 10 days a re-check is required before the game can run.

on page 2 he says:

Yes, EA is ready for us and getting ready for Spore, which will use the same system.

They made a FAQ about the copy protection, heres a quote of the most relevant stuff

Q: Why does MEPC need to reactivate every 10 days?

A: MEPC needs to authenticate every 10 days to ensure that the CD key used for the game is valid. This is designed to reduce piracy and protect valid CD keys.

Q: What happens if I want to play MEPC but do not have an internet connection?

A: You cannot play MEPC without an internet connection. MEPC must authenticate when it is initially run and every 10 days thereafter.

Q: What happens if I install and activate MEPC with an internet connection, but then do not have an internet connection after 10 days? Can I still play MEPC?

A: No. After 10 days the system needs to re-authenticate via the internet. If you do not have an internet connection you will not be able to play until you are reconnected to the internet and able to re-authenticate.

Q: Does the game re-authenticate every 10 game play days or every 10 calendar days?

A: It re-authenticates based on calendar days, not game play days.

WTH is this all about?? ha, they seem to be asking for people to pirate there game so they can play without an internet connection.

And whats with the every 10 day activation?? so if your internet is gone for more then 10 days, you CANT play your legal bought game...

worst copy protection in history

i have the downloaded version of mass effect from EA and not once has it asked me for the serial key or to verify any information to play.

The only metion of it is for the downloadable content that is coming soon to the PC thats out on Xbox already, to download it you have to register your serial like you do with sins to download the patches so its not so bad well at least for the download version anyway.

There was such a major yelling match over it from their fanbase they announced a couple of weeks ago they were not implementing a "full version" - ie they backed off.

The digital version has the same 'copy protection' that the retail version does, according to BioWare. Everything occurs in the background, but try to activate it more than three times and see what happens.

As for them 'backing off', they did no such thing. All they did was drop the recurring 10 day authentication. You still have to activate the game on-online to play, you still get SecuROM with your install, and you're still limited to 3 activations before you have to ask EA to pretty please allow you to have another.

Not directed at anyone except pirates: You are the reason we have to deal with this crap. This is such utter misinformed horsecrap. Copy protection DOES NOT STOP PIRACY! Most games are online for download on or before release date. The software companies are not stupid. They know this. In fact someone I know who works for a well known software company has said that these days it's more and more about control (just what else will this Securom check be doing?) and also that stores like WalMart prefer product with copy protection. In fact you should THANK the pirates actually, since if you ever encounter a game, as I have on many occasions, that WILL NOT RUN due to the copy protection not liking your system (Neverwinter Nights for example), you can thank PIRATES for enabling you to actually run the software you've paid for. After all, you won't be able to return it for a refund as you've opened it and could copied this COPY PROTECTED PRODUCT.If pirates were REALLY to blame, Gal Civ II wouldn't have sold a zillion copies. In my experience, Gal Civ II is one of the most pirated games I've ever seen. I see it pop up all over the place. And yet it still sold by the bucket load. I am so sick of this overly simplistic antipiracy nonsense. There is far more too it than just "GRRR! PIRATES!"Be nice if Valve could get Spore on Steam. About the only games I buy anymore are electronically purchased. I don't pirate the games that you only get in the stores. I simply don't bother with them. The key to beating piracy is just make it less hassle to BUY the games. With Steam it's now EASIER to BUY a game than pirate it. You have to download anyway, but you don't have to muck about with cracks etc... I've bought a lot of games on Steam that I simply wouldn't have bought had it been on disk only, because I prefer not to have drivers secretly installed system. But yeah, far easier to blame the pirates than criticize the blinkered thinking of an entire industry.Pay for your damn games. You filthy pirate. You act like piracy isn't wrong. Its stealing. You are a theif if you download a game for free that a programmer slaved to produce hour after hour to make. Its no different than stealing someone's lunch, stealing someone's wallet, etc. Also, has it dawned on you that galcivs sold a ton of games because its good? Not because it had minimal to no anti piracy in it? "OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Spore is awesome BUT I WILL NOT BUY THIS GAME BECAUSE HEAVEN FORBID I HAVE TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET EVERY 10 DAYS!!!! Never mind the fact that you would almost certainly want to connect to the internet anyway to download the inevitable patches for it. Fine don't buy it. Your loss.

Ok, so first let me start off with saying I just got done playing the sins demo, loved it, going to buy it this weekend. I was just reading these posts chuckling at all the pirate and privacy bashing. But this post kinda set me off so i had to register and post. I consider myself a pirate, yep thats right everyone, FLAME ON!!!

Now seriously, I know there are MANY people out there, who pirate like I do. Here are some examples of games I have gotten off a torrent.
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Might and magic 6 - Where the HELL are you going to find a copy to buy these days?!? and if you do finally find it, its what 5 bucks? I rest my case here.

Dungeon Keeper 2 - Bought this game WAY back in the day and loved it, unfortunatly over the years i have no idea where the disk went, so I went and downloaded it. still play from time to time. nothing immoral here, I paid for the damn game in the past and you cant find it anyplace, same as MM6

Quake 1 - Same as the above post, but the only reason i went and downloaded it was i saw all the crazy enhanced new engines out there for it, Quake 1 now looks better than half life 2 with some engines. its nuts.

Heroes of Might and Magic 5 - Downloaded it, played for about a day and loved it. What did I do? I went and bought it AND an expansion for it.

Arcanum - again, you tell me where to find a copy of this and i will so buy it out of sheer respect for such a good game.

Notice the games here, all old except one, and i went and bought that game and an expansion for it. I will never pirate a new game like sins, mass effect, or the witcher (I considered the witcher so i could see if i liked it, but decided hell no Bioware is one of my favorite developers waaaaaay to much respect for them. They hold a place in my heart from all the great games they have put out)

Closing argument? You drop the term "pirate" and encompass everyone that could ever be described as one as some cheap bastard who either gets kicks from getting things for free, is trying to "stick it to the man", or is just cheap as hell. Its really not true, go take a stroll over to some of the torrent sites out there and read some of the descriptions, alot of them for games will even say "If you like this game go buy it, support your company!"

someone didnt do their research...

Everyone hated Bioshock's DRM.

So EA took Bioshock's DRM and put a fake 'twist' on it, with the expectation of complains. Then they 'backed off' to pretend they were doing a favor, leaving you with... DUN DUN DUN BIOSHOCK'S DRM.

And all the sheep are happy, suddenly. Well played, EA. The 10 day thing was nothing but a lie in the first place, created to get you to accept equally shitty DRM.

And whats your basis for assumming this? The company?here are some of your answer.alot of game company really don't fixed their games after they release it by thinking it's over and done with.some game developers don't have the money to do it and their not paid to do it unlike stardock, so why should they do it? even if they did get a patch for it, it would be the usually patch" help pervent crush, help stablize the game, fix some critical bugs and problems otherwish their customer will kick their "ass" these patch shouldn't even be needed if they didn't send out unfinished games.I buys a lot of games and I really mean A Lots. Most of the games I got their patch won't even appear for months when they was release. the game's sever is a problems causing games not able for online play.
You are enjoying for free what programmers and others have slaved over for months, maybe years. You are offering no compensation for their efforts. How is this different from me taking milk from the cow farmer who worked months to get the cows fat so they can produce milk? Please provide detailed, reasoned arguments why piracy in any form is perfectly ok and how it is different from stealing..I honors those programmers that slaves over months working on their games and really put alot of efforts on them like those here in SD, but why should we honor those game companys trying rip off our money by selling unfinished game with tons of bugs or sells part of their new games and than sell the other parts as expensions? to make things worst they keep adding junk programs to run in the background, prevent other software to run normally, causing internet and computer speed to go down. (I don't want to feel like I'm in house arrest just from buying a game) blame on piracy? lol they need a life. who would someone spend $40-$60 dollars on a lowly rated unfinish games with junks and than get soo mad and couldn't even get a refund because the box is open? now days more people can afford internet and can simply check the game's rating on game websit like gamespot.
And did you not read the post from frogboy saying in the end, those that do something will win out? Oh, but frogboy is an idiot who doesn't know what he is talking about, apparently. I mean what should these companies do? Nothing while there games are being stolen? You guys are mad at the companies, when you should be MAD at the pathetic theives out there who can't pay a tank's worth of gas for a game.Of course some of you guys think putting lots of copy right protection on a game isn't nearly as bad as pirating games.Thats the way are society is. The criminals have more rights and freedoms than the righteous.you make it sound like it's all black and white.do those companies feel sad for their customers when they wasted $50 hard earn cash on their poorly rated, full of bugs, and unfinished games? if they do feel sad about it, shouldn't they at least do somethings about it and make their customers happy instead of making them runnning away. Customers are more important than those scapegoat piracy they been chasing and blaming. The companies treds are becoming more and more apparent evey year it's not suprising to see they are losing sell because they keep scaring their customers away after using those lame excrise over and over again than keep selling unfinish and partial games and never or don't do much to enhance it.Oh before I forgotto all those who pirated games and software please buy them after you finished testing them out and found out you like it. Hackers put virus in cracks and keygens and normally your updated virus scanner not able to pick them up, than you end up paying more lol. hackers don't normally do their service for free, there usually a string or two attach. hacker won't call themselves hackers if they aren't smart unless their wanna be hackers

One more thing, you pointed that companies release unfinished, buggy games that were pushed out. Yeah this happens alot, but you gotta remember 90% of the time its not the developers, its the publishers saying, We want this game out NOW, we're paying you, so do it. we want overhead sales and thats it. Its just like music, when artist sell out, switchup genre, and do totally ludicrous things with their music/act its usually not the musicians really, its their producers/record label companies telling them if you want to keep playing for us, you do what we say. Then you find great bands like NOFX that have their own label and dont have management and they do what they want when they want and have been rockin for 20 years now.

I cancelled my order due to the drm.

Between the "copy protection" and the limited activations I didn't feel as though I was buying the game. You get 3 activations. Changing hardware or a reformat/reinstall of your os will cost an activation. EA refuses to let anyone know what hardware changes will trigger a new activation. [people have asked EA tech support] After the three activations, you have to contact EA to ask for another activation. No one at Bioware seems to know what evidence EA wants to prove you legally bought the game. For a different EA game, you have to contact EA support by phone first, then they wanted photographs/photocopies of the box, disc case with the key showing, the disc itself, the manual cover, and the sales slip either emailed or snail mailed along with the name of the tech you spoke to. Then you'll get your new activations. Maybe. The FAQ stated that EA will handle the new activations on a case by case basis. No one had any information about what criteria EA would use to decide one way or the other.

I won't buy the game. I won't pirate the game. I won't buy the game and use a crack. I was looking forward to the game; I have just about every other Bioware game for the pc. I'm giving up early on Dragon Age; since they are no longer Bioware, but EAbioware, I have the feeling they are going to use the same, if not even more restrictive drm for it. It might take 4 days to crack instead of the less than three days it took to crack ME.

Ironically enough, supposedly because of "listening to their customers" the Czech/Slovak edition [CdProjekt] will come out with Safedisc only. Over 300 pages of complaint about the same issues on their forum here, and nothing was changed.

EA has always been willing to sacrifice anything - even its own reputaion - for the quick buck.
on Jun 12, 2008
How does a company have any right to dictate how many of your computers (or equivalently, for how many major upgrades, with "major" arbitrarily decided) you are allowed to use the product you paid for? Is that even legal?
on Jun 12, 2008
EA think they're so good and such a big company that anyone will buy their products regardless. If they keep pulling crap like this, EA will find out soon enough that customers are not idiots, they are in fact (for the most part) intelligent human beings who refuse to put up with the garbage they are currently trying to pull.

Maybe a few million in lost revenue will make them re-think their stance.

Guess again.

Honestly, as long as people are into console gaming, the world will never be free of idiots.

DRM is a sickness. And EA is the bigest source of the plague.
