Spore Creature Creator was released on a game magazine and after that it went on the net really fast.

I know theres a Spore thread, but it would be nice to have a thread all to itself for images of your creatures.

So if you dont wanna wait until the 17th, download the trial version from here

The editor really shows the limitation of the engine (doesn't really create many 'custom' animations) and the lack of creativity the devolopers had. You're more or less limited to things that exist or a morph of two animals.

I love Spore! The creature creator is amazing. You should check it out if you haven't already.

Holes in the design.

My biggest gripe is poor handling of tails and weapon objects. I'll be damned if I can get it to attack with weapons if they aren't on an actual hand possessing arm. Bloody irritating that, not a lot of point in having a mace on a tail when it's just there for looks. Maybe the game will use them differently, but if it's like the creature creator is this is a major letdown. In RL we have stegosaurus, scorpions, porcupines, but dangerous tails in spore require a hand?

The more icky, but less depressing due to insignificant game play ramifications, body shaping. I don't want to make a lardass, I want to make a giant scorpion with a spiked tail(yeah... the tail is a problem too) and a wide, flat body with them little insect legs sticking out. Ok, so I haven't got any insect legs either, but I can't make a wide body to start with. Nature isn't round dammit!

Flight doesn't appear to be in, too bad. I'd love to make a weak ass flier that dive bombed it's victims and flew back to safety.

It's an amazingly simple editor, EA can burn in hell, but the developers deserve every dime they make and then some. Short of serious flaws or a DRM issue more severe than the asinine three activations, I'll be getting the game. If they fix the editors shortfalls I might even buy the full version of it. Pissing away money to get something quicker isn't one of my strong points though.

Yep, I tried to make an insect as well... It's okay as long as you do something remotely spider / ant shaped, though.

Tails and weapons seem to be pure fluff, which is a shame. I'm waiting to see the full game, though - or the full editor, which apparently is also a demo of the game itself.

Weapons aren't fluff, they do actually affect damage (watch the stats).

also, this is a plains stalker, it is made of ownage and win

on Jun 17, 2008
They affect the stats, but the animation still uses hands for the attack animations. That spiked ball on your creatures tail may lead to a better attack rating, but it isn't used as a weapon itself.

Hence: Weapons -> Fluff. It doesn't make the slightest difference where you put them.

and out pops more! straight from the pooper!

It is in, I don't know how it works in the game exactly, but just equip one of your creatures with the wings and looks at its stats in the top right corner. One of the blue or green buttons will be flight. Just press on it and he'll fly about for a bit. The more wings the creature has, supposedly the longer it will stay flying.

why could spore have not stayed like this,

The video above is a video of spore as it stodd being demoed in 2005...

It looks so much better than the current game. MAybe its just me and the poor picture quality of the video. But the game looks so much more scientific and realistic. But now it just looks like a big cartoon

Two words: Electronic Arts

They've gone a long way since their Amiga days.

Crisme: That was a very happy creation

I agree with you, just look at the creatures movement, it looks much better.
Its a good question if its because of the limited SCC version, but i fair it is not..

Heres my most recent one. Finally managed to discover that you can add limbs to the joints of those you've already place, making some interesting creatures:

So I'm gonna try to pick up the full one today! I want to make more dodo-esque creatures.

While browsing through this I just figured out something...

Back in 2005 when Spore was JUST being introduced at GDC 2005, Will Wright was talking about the inevitable rise of production costs of making games. So... instead of having content created for the user, the user creates the content.

This led me to thinking.... So the jobs of content creation has essentially been outsourced. Not only that, we have to PAY $10 just for the privilege of creating content, rather than E.A. paying us for content provided for their game.

Uh-huh....
